June Nature Notes Featured Image

Nature Notes · June

This first week of June brought plenty of rain, including a few thunderstorms. We enjoyed a full harvest of June-bearing strawberries, observed ants of all sizes in our yard, and finally planted our vegetable garden. We also wondered about the hummingbird we found in the pollinator garden bed.

What We Noticed

  • Storm clouds are bigger and darker
  • The driveway is slippery when wet
  • The plants didn’t need to be watered
  • So many June-bearing strawberries

Weather Conditions

Lots of rain and a few thunderstorms!

Field Notes

Ants in our yard ranged in size from tiny (1 mm) to huge (almost 2 cm), including winged ants preparing to leave the nest.

We planted the veggie garden:

  • 10 starter plants – 5 vegetables and 5 herbs or flowers
  • 8 seed varieties – including peas and beans I’m hoping to cross-pollinate

Wondering About

I found a hummingbird and buried it in our yard. Did it die in one of the storms?
