Seasonal observations, nature notes, and homeschool reflections from the week outdoors.

Field Notes · Late June
The first week of summer brought cooler gray skies and a surprising rainstorm after several warm weeks. We spent time checking on the garden, watching hummingbirds drink from the feeder, visiting a nearby farm, and noticing the changing rhythm of the season as the strawberry harvest came to an end.
What We Noticed
- Butterfly bush and poppies are blooming now
- A hummingbird frenzy at the feeder each day
- Rescued an alder tree sprout from the mint pot and replanted it
- Very few strawberries left on our plants
- Lavender plants are blooming all over town

Weather Conditions
Mostly gray weather this week.
A heavy rainstorm quickly dropped the temperature from 68°F to 56°F.

Field Notes
In my vegetable garden:
- The beans didn’t sprout; it looks like an animal dug them up
- Peas and corn are growing well
- An asparagus stalk appeared
- Pumpkin sprouts are growing too

Wondering About
Why are there so many more flies at farms and in barns?
