Seasonal observations, nature notes, and homeschool reflections from the week outdoors.

Outside This Week September Featured Image

Outside This Week ยท September

The days were noticeably shorter this week, with darkness arriving by bedtime. We noticed, creatures busily collecting food in the yard, pink colors in the sky, stars at night, and the changes a real summer storm brought. We wondered where the creatures went for shelter during the heavy rain and imagined where all the water goes when so much falls on the ground.

What We Noticed

In our backyard:

  • We found a brown praying mantis- the first ever in our yard!
  • The squirrel is very busy all day back and forth across the fence
  • The bunny ate our kale plant and other yummy leaves
  • We had our first measurable rain of the summer after the storm this week

Weather Conditions

We had three heavy, rainy days with about 1 inch of rain.

Field Notes

The Sun went down before 8 pm. I saw pink clouds in the sky.

By 8:30 pm it was dark, and I could see 5 stars. One was the North Star!

The sky was pink again in the morning.

Wondering About

Where did the praying mantis go for shelter when the rain started?
