Third Grade Reading List

Updated September 24, 2026

A growing collection of the chapter books we are reading together during third grade. This page serves as our family reading journal, with short reflections and links to related articles as we explore themes more deeply on parMINDary.

More Reading Together

You will find a mix of early reader chapter books, graphic novels, and a heavy emphasis on longer chapter books. Some may be read aloud by the child, and in our home, many were read aloud by a parent for a shared family experience. We explore a diverse range of topics and subjects through both classic and modern stories.

Reading together is woven into our everyday learning, and we are usually reading more than one chapter book at the same time. Each story leads to new questions, conversations, and discoveries.

Along the way, we note a few of the patterns, ideas, and connections that stood out to us, with links to related articles on parMINDary as our library continues to grow.

Stories We Loved

These books were chosen simply because they looked fun, matched our interests, or felt like the right story at the right time. They became some of our favorite shared reading experiences and often sparked new conversations along the way.

Tiny Heroes

Tiny heroes often led to some of our biggest conversations and are among our favorite protagonists. From classroom hamsters to adventurous mice, these stories explored courage, friendship, and seeing the world from a much smaller perspective.

Video Game Fun

Fast-paced adventures and graphic novels brought familiar game mechanics into reading, making these books especially engaging while introducing storytelling, teamwork, and problem solving. We read several of them more than once.

Fantasy & Dragons

Magic, mythical creatures, and imagined worlds opened the door to stories about courage, friendship, and choosing what is right when the path isn’t always clear. These stories were our first step into true fantasy worlds.

Learning Through Stories

These books were chosen intentionally to explore bigger ideas through stories. Rather than treating history, science, or mathematics as separate subjects, we discovered them through memorable characters, adventures, and narratives that made learning feel connected.

American History

These stories set in the United States, were full of humor and hardship. They brought the history of our country and continent to life, helping us imagine what life was like in the 1700’s and 1800’s, while making connections to the places we know today.

Math Stories

These books showed that mathematics is about much more than computation. They encouraged curiosity, logical thinking, patterns, and seeing the world through numbers and big ideas.

Noticing the World

Some books encouraged us to slow down, observe more closely, and imagine the world from a different point of view. Whether looking closely at nature or thinking about size and perspective, these stories reminded us that changing how we look often changes what we discover.

Nature Adventures

Nature stories encouraged us to slow down and notice the relationships between animals, habitats, seasons, and the living world around us. Stories can also make scientific ideas memorable by placing them inside adventures. These books encouraged us to ask questions, observe the world, and continue exploring beyond the page.

Scale and Perspective

Some of our favorite stories encouraged us to think differently about size, distance, and point of view. Whether imagining life only a few inches tall or seeing the world through an unusual perspective, these books reminded us that changing our viewpoint often changes what we notice.
